If you haven’t jumped on the silhouette cameo bandwagon yet, where have you been? This is one of the best tools for a paper crafter or anyone who loves arts and crafts! There has never been a better time to use a tablet for easier cutting with your Silhouette Cameo or Portrait machines since Silhouette recently released their new mobile app. Silhouette Go is a new mobile app compatible with Android and iOS that allows you to use your Silhouette machine on the go without using a computer.

Now, when working with a Silhouette cutting machine, a tablet can be an indispensable tool. The tablet can be used as a stand to display your cut file or pattern, as a guide to make sure your cuts are accurate, and to control your cutter. For those quick and easy cutting projects, we found that our tablets tested performed really well when cutting over Bluetooth with the machine and it’s almost on par with Cricut’s mobile app.

Since Silhouette developed their new app for “on the go” crafting, it really appealed to us to use a smaller form factor tablet that is easy to carry around with our machine. We tested Android tablets, iPads and Windows Tablets and after a multitude of crafty cutting projects, we settled on the2021 Apple iPad Mini as one of the best tablets for Silhouette Cameo or Portrait machines.

The Best Tablets for Silhouette Cutting Machines in 2022

1

2021 Apple iPad mini

Our Best Overall Pick
product image

The iPad mini is one of Apple’s first devices to ship with Apple’s A15 Bionic processor, and benchmark tests reveal that it performs similarly to the A14 in the iPad Air from last year but with quicker and more efficient graphics. As a result, the iPad mini is one of the most powerful tablets you can buy, and it performs admirably all-around. It’s also a fantastic multipurpose device, whether it’s for crafting on your Silhouette machine or even for more intensive gaming.

I’m a big fan of small tablets. I’ve owned the iPad mini since its launch and have used it daily since. In fact, I’ve even replaced the first iPad mini that I ever bought because it was so good.

When we were creating quick designs, the iPad mini worked well with the Silhouette Go app and an Apple pencil. Importing our designs and having them cut was simple, straightforward, and hassle-free. From an ease of use standpoint, the smaller iPad is far superior to pulling out the laptop for cutting. Because of its smaller size, it is also the less costly iPad, but it packs a powerful punch when it comes to handling all of our test apps.

What we liked best was that we could easily create an SVG image in Procreate (or any of the many other design apps available on the App Store with this functionality) and have it printed right away. Although Android tablets have this capability, we found that designing with the compatible Apple pencil was a breeze on the iPad mini.

Samsung Tab A7 Lite 8.7"

Best Budget Pick
product image

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is an 8-inch tablet that works well for the basics – online browsing, emails, and YouTube – and we had no problems using it with the Silhouette.

It’s well-built, with a glass face and an aluminium rear. The device has a quality feel overall, thanks to the aluminium frame and plastic ends. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 lite includes a USB Type-C 2.0 connection for fast charging the 5100 mAh battery.

For a reasonable price, this is one of the top budget options we recommend, and it appears to be Samsung’s most budget-friendly tablet right now.

Apple iPad Mini, 5th Gen

product image

The iPad Mini 5 is ideal for the purpose for which it was created. This iPad is not the latest iPad mini, nor is it attempting to replace your laptop, but it is a super-fast tablet that will easily slip into your bag and serve as an incredible multipurpose machine.

It was as simple to create, import, and cut designs as it was to create and import designs for the 2021 iPad mini. The only drawback we found was that it only supported the first generation Apple pencil, rather than the first generation on the 2021 iPad mini.

Apart from that minor annoyance, it performed admirably, and if you’re on a tight budget and looking for a smaller form factor device to pair with your Silhouette, the previous generation iPad is the one for you.

2020 Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 10.4’’

product image

Moving on to the Android tablets compatible with Silhouette Go, the 2020 Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 is a good cheaper alternative for people who prefer Android tabs or are on a budget. Our tests revealed that the Silhouette Go app was easy to install from the Play Store, and we were able to connect with our Cameo machine and carry out a few cuts. A downside is that the android design apps were not up to standard as the iPad’s procreate for example however it is very much possible to download SVG files rather than creating them yourself.

At $100 less than Apple’s iPad mini price, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 is priced to dethrone the entry-level iPad as the best tablet. Furthermore, it has thin bezels and facial recognition, both of which Apple reserves for more expensive models.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor and 3GB of RAM power the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7. This was more than enough for day-to-day tasks and was more than enough to run our cutting machines.
This may not apply to everyone, but as a frequent multitasker, I noticed the Silhouette Go app becoming jittery and using the split-screen with a chrome tab open looking for designs to cut. However, it played great when the app was used on its own.
So, if you’re looking for the ultimate Android tablet, this Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 could be well worth the look.

Lenovo Tab M8 Tablet, 8" HD

product image

This is an 8-inch tablet with the same pricing as the Samsung Tab A7 Lite, and the Tab M8 follows the trend of giving a wonderful low-end price for extremely high value.

The battery life is unbelievably fantastic compared to just about any other inexpensive tablet, which was a great surprise to us. I’ve used it for many projects, including testing out the Silhouette Go app and a few projects on a Cricut Joy, and it performed admirably.

The screen-on time is estimated to be around 16 hours at 50% brightness, which is easily double or more than the battery life of a cheaper tablet. You could take this on a long day of travel and be reasonably certain that you wouldn’t need to recharge it.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

product image

When it comes to electrical devices with outstanding and modern characteristics, Microsoft is always at the top of the list. This tablet is my daily driver, and I use it for everything: typing, drawing, work, gaming, and so on.

This is a true next-generation tablet, more comparable to a laptop, but it is light, speedy, and extremely portable. Silhouette StudioIt’s powered by a laptop-class Quad-core 10th Gen Intel® CoreTM i7-1065G7 Processor, which will be more than enough for daily tasks, any crafting and cutting which you do on its app, entertainment, and intensive gaming. You can even multitask with Silhouette Studio and a browser tab or basically any program on the tablet.

We were able to run the official Silhouette Studio in its entirety (as opposed to the Silhouette Go app) and everything that a laptop or desktop computer can because this tablet runs the full Windows Operating System.

It is critical to understand that the original Surface (not the Surface Pro) cannot run Silhouette Studio. The was built on ARM architecture instead of x86 (Intel) architecture and ran Windows RT, which did not allow for the installation of programs that were not part of its app store. The original Surface was more comparable to a large phone or tablet than a laptop.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro is an excellent laptop-tablet hybrid. It’s great for crafting, but if you want to use it while sitting somewhere, such as on the couch, the kickstand can be a bit of a downside. If you plan on using your device at a desk or table where your computer is but also want to take it with you to craft locations, the Surface Pro could be the perfect choice for you.

Buyer’s Guide: Best Tablets for Silhouette Cutting Machines

Here’s everything you need to know to help choose the best tablet for Silhouette cutting machines.

Why Use a Tablet with Your Silhouette Machine?

Because of the large number of capabilities available on laptops and computers, Silhouette Studio is a software program developed and used on these types of devices. However, it is often inconvenient to constantly bring a laptop or computer on the move.

One of the most significant advantages of using a tablet is its versatility. Compared to a laptop, a tablet is far more compact and takes up less space in your bag or purse. Laptops are also more expensive than tablets, and because tablets have a touch screen, users can do a more significant number of tasks in less time than they would if they were using a laptop. When working with your Silhouette, a tablet is a wonderful alternative to laptops or computers. Even though some functionalities will not be available on your tablet, you will be able to carry out many tasks that you would usually need to do.

What Features Should You Look for In a Tablet to Use with Your Silhouette Machine?

Many factors must be considered before purchasing a tablet. Of course, the choice is entirely up to you, but you should always buy what you need, not what others are using. Before you buy a tablet for a silhouette machine, here are some aspects to keep in mind.

Tablet Size

The tablet size is essential as it affects your user experience and how portable the tablet is. So, you need to think about your priorities and how you’ll utilize your tablet.

If you need a lightweight, small and compact device for use on the go, then you will definitely want to check the weight and dimensions.  In addition, you may want to go for a smaller model to accommodate your bag so you can take it everywhere with your creative supplies and machine.

Or, you may desire a multifunctional tablet for watching movies or editing images. In that case, a larger screen with high resolution may be more essential to you.

Operating System

The operating system is another key aspect to note. Again, it will depend on the manufacturer, with the primary choices being iOS, Windows, and Android.

You may already have a preference, in which case you can make your selection from the devices listed above.

If not, consider whether you’ll need to use any specific apps on your tablet. Not all apps are available on every operating system, so you will want to double-check that before you decide.

Compatibility with your other gadgets could also be a deal-breaker. For example, if you have an iPhone and Mac, you may prefer an iPad. It will make syncing and connecting your devices more straightforward.

If you use procreate, then an iPad is a no-brainer since this program is not (yet) compatible with Android devices.

Processor

Don’t forget to check out the processor, too. This component powers your tablet, so you definitely don’t want to compromise on it.

The basic rule is that the more cores, the more powerful your tablet is. So, an octa-core processor will trump a quad-core processor.

Display Quality & Resolution

The display is a vital component.

High-end tablets frequently offer exceptionally high-resolution displays with a broad colour spectrum. As so, photographs, videos, and games all look great.

But inexpensive tablets tend to fall behind when it comes to resolution and image quality. So, it all boils down to your financial situation and what you can afford.

The elements to look out for include the resolution, colour spectrum, and refresh rate. A higher refresh rate makes for a much better viewing experience – therefore, go for 120 Hz if possible.

Price

Last but not least, the tablet you purchase needs to fit into your budget. First and foremost, you’ll make things easier for yourself if you reduce your spending.

Then, you can search for the best available tablet in that price range. It will make your decision easy and enable you to pick the best tablet for your needs.

There are some excellent tablets to use as your companion for crafting with the Silhouette machines at every price point. The Silhouette mobile app has shown some improvements over the previous few years, coming in and out of beta; we believe that the app will become more polished soon with more capabilities to the desktop Silhouette Studio.

Browse through the reviews above for tablets from affordable, midrange to premium. Then, you may click through to check out the price of each tablet and choose your selection.
